Choosing a Nomenclature: Is There an End in Sight?

The Asian Harmonization Working Party should be commended for taking the lead on resolving the issue of choosing a global medical device nomenclature system, and for the transparent way in which it is doing so.

The organisation seemingly announces its every move – most recently via a newly introduced electronic newsletter1 – and is quick to act: at its secretariat meeting in early January, it agreed to carry out an online survey to identify the various medical device nomenclature systems being used in different countries and whether the regulatory authorities in these jurisdictions are “willing to change to another system for the sake of global harmonization”...
