In times of financial belt-tightening, medicine prices are an easy target for national governments. And it seems that, in Europe at least, pharmaceutical firms should be prepared for the return of an old-fashioned method of cost-containment.

History is littered with examples of draconian price reductions in countries such as France, Greece, Italy and Spain, while Germany led the way in introducing a reference price system that several other countries later emulated...
