The lure of orphan products

The global market for orphan drugs was worth almost $85 billion in 2009. Furthermore, the market is predicted to grow at a compound annual rate of around 6% over the next few years, which is at least as good as the growth achieved by some of the top companies in recent years.

Small wonder, then, that “big pharma” is turning its attention to biotechs developing treatments for orphan indications in its quest for acquisitions...
